Much like the beginning credits of Monty Python’s “Search for the Holy Grail”… I’m completely altering the style of my writing. First, my laptop died and all my notes and ideas for this post got shot down with it. Second, I have an eerie feeling that synergy in technology will lead to a technological singularity within this decade and “writing” blogs will become passe.
Let me sum up what I do remember of my original plans for this entry: smart phones steadily increase in power and connection speeds, IBM develops ever more powerful supercomputers along with new AI software able to learn and memorize facts and capable of answering verbal questions with proper syntax, linked data is now just an idea but it will come to fruition shortly. Of course for each of these technological wonders I had witty comments and examples ready to illustrate their significance, but now you’ll just have to take my words at face value or do the research and analysis yourself.
What I foresee happening is this: the above mentioned technologies synergized (yes, I know it’s not a verb yet, but soon it will be the singular most powerful description of the unfathomable leap in humanity’s evolution) with a cloud of web based supercomputers will produce the following: an internet with Artificial Intelligence capable of conversing with smart phone users through voice interface, not only capable of providing factual answers but capable of problem solving, analysis, prediction and custom design. In effect we’re talking about a technological singularity whose knowledge is accessible for any smart phone wielding human. If the divinity of this event escapes you I suggest you read “A Choice of Gods” by Clifford D. Simak.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI noticed something interesting which is related to this post: namely that the length of time it takes for technologies to be synergized often takes decades or longer. Research and development by companies like Corning have products waiting for half a century before the world catches up and is ready to employ them. For instance it took Chemcor (now called Gorilla glass) over half a century to find use in smart phones and TV screens. Optical fiber was invented in 1934 but not put to use till 1970’s. Nevertheless when all the technological pieces are ready, one only has to have a vision of a grander thing and put them together like a jigsaw puzzle to reveal a completely new picture of tomorrow… and this particular picture transcends far beyond science and art…
Seems things are developing quickly, here is something explaining that Google’s Android operating system has already made a smart phone voice interface a reality: Android Beefs Up Hands-Free Commands
Artificial Intelligence has made excellent progress and a good candidate might be a digital organism that has evolved basic intelligence, namely Charles Ofria’s Avidians.
Oh, and lest we forget (put intended, sorry I couldn’t help it)! Here is a noble reason why linked data is becoming and has to be indoctrinated into a global web: Sharing of Data Leads to Progress on Alzheimer’s
